Actual Wedding Budget Breakdown (75 Guests in Coromandel, NZ) + Free Budget Template
Before you begin, let me just say — welcome. I have been exactly where you are now.
Wondering how much it is really going to cost.
Trying to be sensible.
Wanting your dream day without overspending on the things that do not truly matter.
To be honest, I do feel like I went overboard with parts of our wedding. I did not have a proper system. I had never seen another couple’s real wedding budget breakdown. I had no reference point beyond the vague “average wedding cost” figures you see online.
So I am sharing ours.
Not because you should spend what we did — but because seeing a real New Zealand wedding budget is far more helpful than looking at averages.
If you are still figuring out realistic numbers for 2026, read our detailed guide: How Much Does a Wedding Cost in NZ? 2026 Real Numbers Guide.
And if you want to understand why the widely quoted $35,000 “average” can be misleading, read this first: Why the $35,000 Average Wedding Cost Is Misleading.
If you want to stay organised from day one, the Little White Book wedding planner includes a structured wedding budget section so you can track every expense clearly from the beginning.
Our Real Wedding: The Overview
We were married on 20 February 2016 in Coromandel, New Zealand at a private home we hired for the weekend.
- 75 guests
- Private home venue
- Full weekend hire
- Accommodation for family
- BYO beverages
- Significant hireage costs
We ended up spending just shy of $53,000 NZD (excluding honeymoon and engagement rings).
Our original working budget was $48,000 NZD. We went about $5,000 over.
The Venue: A Beautiful but Expensive Choice
Renting the property cost around $10,000 NZD. It included accommodation for many of our closest family and friends who had travelled long distances.
Because the venue was a private home, we had to hire absolutely everything:
- Glassware
- Cutlery
- Tables and chairs
- Catering equipment
- Staff
- Styling items
- Lighting
What you save on BYO alcohol, you often spend on hireage and logistics.

Where Our $53,000 Went
Major Expenses
- Venue hire – $10,000
- Dress – approx. $10,000
- Photography
- Catering (canapés, shared feasting dinner, dessert tables, cake, late night pizzas)
- Hireage and staffing
Where We Saved
- No videographer
- No wedding transport
- BYO alcohol
- Used an existing ring as my wedding band
- DJ instead of live band
- Simple invitations

What We Prioritised (And What We Did Not)
Every couple should decide early where they will splurge and where they will save.
For us, our non-negotiables were:
- Dress
- Photography
- Food and drink
- Guest experience
We consciously chose not to prioritise:
- Videography
- Elaborate transport
- Marquee hire
If I could give one piece of advice: set three to four priorities and protect those.
Everything else is flexible.
What I Would Do Differently
- Track smaller expenses more carefully
- Build in a contingency buffer from the start
- Use a structured wedding budget template immediately

You Do Not Need to Spend $50,000
This is important.
You absolutely do not need to spend what we did.
Our wedding budget reflected:
- Location choice
- Guest accommodation
- Personal splurges
- Building a venue from scratch
You can plan an incredible wedding at $25k, $35k or $45k depending on guest count and priorities.
A wedding budget is not about impressing people. It is about intentional spending.
Why Wedding Budgets Blow Out
It is rarely one massive decision that causes overspending.
It is usually:
- Upgrading linen
- Adding florals
- Extra canapés
- Additional hireage
- Guest list creep
- Last minute decor decisions
Ten small “just $500 more” decisions quickly become $5,000.
This is why tracking matters.
